The joint National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has announced the suspension of the indefinite nationwide strike, which had entered its second day on Wednesday.
The decision to suspend the strike was reached following a meeting on Wednesday that thoroughly discussed the outcomes of an earlier interface with the Federal Government, led by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.
TUC President, Festus Osifo, confirmed the suspension, indicating a willingness to engage in dialogue and resolve the issues at hand. The decision reflects the labor unions’ commitment to fostering a constructive relationship with the government for the benefit of workers and the nation as a whole.
The breakthrough came after a discussion led by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, during which both parties addressed the concerns raised by the labor unions. The unions had embarked on the strike to protest against issues such as workers’ welfare, economic policies, and the recent physical assault on NLC President, Joe Ajaero.
One of the key assurances that led to the suspension of the strike was the commitment from the government to prosecute those responsible for the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero. The unions had demanded justice for the attack, and the government’s pledge to take legal action provided a significant step towards resolving the impasse.
The labor unions expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue with the government, highlighting the importance of finding common ground to address the various challenges facing Nigerian workers.
