The Yobe State Government has obtained 1.5 million doses of vaccines to carry out a vaccination campaign for an estimated livestock population of seven million in all 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
Governor Mai Mala Buni announced this during the flag-off of the exercise in Kukareta, Damaturu, on Thursday.
The vaccination is aimed at preventing the spread of Anthrax disease from other parts of the country into the state and controlling desert encroachment.
Anthrax is a highly contagious disease that poses a risk to both humans and animals. Given Yobe State’s proximity to neighboring countries and its role as a major livestock producer with international cattle routes leading to Central Africa, the vaccination is essential to minimize the potential outbreak of the disease within the state.
The decision to vaccinate livestock comes after reports of Anthrax outbreaks in Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Niger State, Nigeria.
The Yobe State Government is taking proactive measures to prevent the disease from spreading, especially due to its transmissible nature to humans.
