The Egbin power generating station has been shut down, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), to allow the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC) to repair a pipeline supplying gas to the facility.
The TCN announced in a notice signed by its management that the station would be shut down on Monday.
The facility will be closed for three days, according to the TCN.
“This is to notify the public that as at 11:13 hours of 18th December 2023, Egbin Power generating station was shut down to allow the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC) to maintain linking gas pipeline supplying gas to Egbin Power Station,” the notice reads.
“The station will be shut down for 3 days from today.”
The shutdown will result in a reduction of 676 megawatts (MW) of bulk power generated into the nation’s grid for three days, according to TCN.
As a result, TCN stated that the amount of bulk power available for delivery to distribution companies’ load centres across the country would be reduced during the period.
The Egbin power plant, located in Lagos’ Ikorodu axis, is said to contribute more than 16% of total electricity generated to the national grid.
Following a fire outbreak at the plant in February 2022, power generation dropped by 630 megawatts (MW), but operations resumed a few days later.
