The explosion was a consequence of illegal crude oil refining activities carried out by suspected oil bunkerers trying to establish an unauthorized refinery site in the area.
Operatives of the 26 Support Engineer Regiment (SER-Nigerian Army Engineers) and Pipeline Infrastructures Nigeria Limited (PINL), had about two weeks ago launched massive and intensive clampdown and destruction of illegal refineries along the right of way and its corridor.
The accident could be attributed to the fear of being caught during the crackdown, prompting the illicit activities to be hurriedly conducted, ultimately resulting in the tragic incident.
PINL, in collaboration with security agencies, had been consistently working to dismantle illegal refineries in the region and had engaged the community in public enlightenment efforts to discourage such dangerous practices.
Despite these efforts, some individuals persisted in engaging in crude oil theft and illegal refining, underscoring the need for continued education and security measures to deter these perilous activities.
The chief security officer (CSO) of Ibaa community, Rufus Welekwe, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and urged the youth to refrain from illegal crude oil refining, emphasizing the importance of engaging in lawful and safe ventures.
